10 favorite books I read in 2020
These year-end lists are a dime a dozen, but a lot of my friends like to keep up with what I’m reading. So, here are ten of my favorite books I read in 2020 — some published this year, some not.
I’m not sure if they’re my “top ten,” or if they’re just the ten that came to mind, but they’re certainly worth your attention if you have interest in reading them in 2021. I read very little fiction this year, but if I had to pick I probably enjoyed Tomcat in Love by Tim O’Brien the most. It didn’t make the list because it looked weird to include it alone.
Favorite theology books
- Figural Reading and The Old Testament: Theology and Practice by Don Collett
- “He Descended to the Dead:” An Evangelical Theology of Holy Saturday by Matt Emerson
- Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching by Irenaeus of Lyons
- Trinity Without Hierarchy: Reclaiming Nicene Orthodoxy in Evangelical Theology by Michael F. Bird and Scott Harrower
- When Narcissism Comes to Church: Healing Your Community from Emotional and Spiritual Abuse by Chuck DeGroat
- Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers by Dane Ortlund
- From Paul to Valentinus: Christians at Rome in the First Two Centuries by Peter Lampe
Favorite non-fiction (non-theology)
- What is a Girl Worth?: My Story of Breaking the Silence and Exposing the Truth about Larry Nassar and USA Gymnastics by Rachael Denhollander
- The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel Van Der Kolk
- It’s All Worth Living For by Levi the Poet
Looking forward, I would love to focus on fiction. (Maybe once I’m actually done with my Bachelors, I’ll have time for it during Masters prep work.)
All in all, there’s been a lot of great books available in the last year and a half or so.
